What Are Plastic Gears

Plastic gears are basically the polymer version of metal and wooden gears that function in much the same way. They are meant to facilitate the transition of power from a source to a destination to achieve a certain task. 

However, there are many differences when comparing these two versions of the same machine part. The biggest of which has to do with production. Simply put, plastic gears are produced using plastic injection molding technology. In contrast, metal and wood gear are produced using fabrication.

There are many advantages to doing it this way, with the biggest being efficiency, reduction of waste, and costs. Plastic gear can be produced faster, in a completed state, and at much cheaper prices.

What Are Gear Molds?

Gear molds are the casings in which plastic gears are made. They are typically made of steel with a hollowed chamber where the gear will take its shape. 

The whole process begins with designing the plastic gear molding so that it perfectly meets the measurements and criteria for the specific order. However, there are also pre-made designs that already meet all of the most common types of gear in the market. 

After that, plastic pellets are fed into a heat chamber where they will be melted and then guided through a nozzle that will inject the liquified plastic into the mold. From there, every inch of the hollowed-out chamber will be filled until there is no longer any air pocket or gap that remains.

This is essential since any structural weakness in the gear such as air bubbles will result in a significantly weaker gear. Once the melted plastic has completely filled up the chamber, the materials are allowed to cool until they form a solid plastic gear. 

From there, it’s just a matter of opening the mold so that the plastic gear can be extracted. The gear is then inspected for any imperfections as part of the quality control protocol. All plastic gears that managed to pass inspection will then be sent for packaging and ready for shipping.
