What Are Plastic Gears?
Plastic gears are a specialized component that are typically found and used in machinery. These small or large components often vary in size, and are typically found in the shape of a cone or a cylinder. These pieces are designed with equally-spaced teeth that are cut into the surface, so that when two plastic gears are meshed together, they facilitate force, rotations, and resistance from the shaft that drives them, to the shaft that is being driven.
Gears allow for the movement of multiple shafts in a single, continuous motion by transferring movement from one to another. At Kore Industries, plastic gears are a major aspect of what we do. What Are Plastic Gear Molds?
In order to manufacture plastic gears, we use a molding process – similar to that of our other molding processes. Our process begins with a plastic injection mold that features gear cavities. From there, we use molten plastic to create the gear. Once the molten plastic is poured into our mold and cools, we are left with a solid gear component that is ready for production use and application.

The Different Types of Plastic Gears
Plastic gears come in many different types and forms – all depending upon their uses, their purposes, and their applications. Different gears may function differently from others, and things like dimensions, face width, number of teeth, and helix angle combine with other important factors like precision standards and torque requirements to ensure that the gear you’re looking to have produced is most effective for the product you’ll be using it for.
Some of the most common types of gears that we produce include:
These types of gears involve the use of parallel shafts, which use a cylindrical form and an angled gear profile. The teeth of these gear perform the meshing function better than other gears, and they’re specifically designed to transmit high loads. They’re typically used in high-speed situations and they are based off of an axial-based thrust force.
Spur gears also feature parallel shafts and use a cylindrical form like helical gears, except they do not feature an angled gear profile. Instead, their tooth line is straight and positioned parallel to the shaft. These are one of the most common plastic gears that you can find and they offer tremendous accuracy.
Unlike helical gears and spur gears, bevel gears feature a cone form, and they are used for the transmission of force between two intersecting shafts. Within the family of bevel gears, there are a number of other specialized gears that have their own use cases. These gears include:
- Spiral Bevel Gears
- Straight Bevel Gears
- Helical Bevel Gears
- Angular Bevel Gears
- Miter Gears
- Zerol Bevel Gears
- Hypoid Gears
- Crown Gears
Rack & Pinion Gears
These types of gears feature the same shape and the same sized teeth that are cut along a flat surface at an equal distance apart from each other. Together, these two flat surfaces form a rack with the cylindrical gear, and the rotational motion becomes converted into a linear motion to generate movement.
Internal gears are unique, in that they are either cone or cylindrical shaped, with teeth cut into the inside of the cones or cylinders. These gears are then paired with external gears to generate motion. Internal plastic gears are often used for specific shaft couplings, as well as planetary gear drives.
Miter gears are used to facilitate direction change during power transmission, without affecting the speed of motion. These types of gears come in two forms, spiral miter gears and straight miter gears. Depending upon the thrust, you may want to note that spiral gears may have an axial thrust direction.
Worm & Worm Gears
These types of gears are highly specialized and consist of a worm and worm wheel combination. The worm is a shaft with a screw profile. Worms and worm wheels are not typically limited to a cylindrical shape – we also manufacture some that are shaped like an hourglass, which paves the way for comprehensive control over the contact ratio between gears.
Lastly, screw gears are low load-carrying capacity gears and are not typically suited for large power transmissions. Their contact point is the tooth of each gear, which makes them ideal for rudimentary transmissions and basic motions.
